CDMA (code division multiple access)

A digital communication technology used by some carriers to provide PCS service. Other technologies used are TDMA and GSM. CDMA1x is a digital wireless technology that uses a "spread spectrum" technique to scatter a signal across a wide range of frequencies. This is also known as 1xRTT-1x and stands for a single carrier, while RTT stands for Radio Transmission Technology.

CDMA1x has several unique features:

maximum speeds of up to 115kbps data transmission speeds, which translates to decreased wait times while logging on and downloading.

asymmetric access allows for faster download speeds, which directly supports user expectations and satisfies requirements for high-speed, data-intensive applications.

1x allows a maximum of 60 active users (per serving antenna sector) to request and receive packets simultaneously. Depending on a specific activity factor (i.e. traffic loading), a much larger number of users can use the system. For example, if users in a given sector are operating applications with an estimated 10 percent activity factor, then 600 users can effectively be served at a time.
